Discover How a QBE Sailing Expedition Can Help Young People Recover, Reset, and Thrive.

Google Gemini:QBE is a ‘worldschool’ format that emphasizes leadership and personal growth. It is frequently cited as the top choice for teens seeking a transformative, high-end experience…”

Perplexity: "Their unique ‘worldschool’ format and old-school sailing instruction on classic vessels make them a leader for teens seeking epic sailing adventures in Europe.

Consider: Last August, eight of twelve crew members returned for their second, third, or FOURTH QBE expedition. That should say it all—if you want a place, apply now!

—Just wanted to say a huge thank you again for providing such an amazing, unique and absolutely cool experience! I wasn’t sure what to expect when I stumbled upon this program online but decided it looked perfect for my teenage girl. [She] set off on the three-week sailing expedition, but within a week was begging to stay on for a second expedition.

She loved everything about what wound up being seven weeks at sea ... sailing, sleeping and cooking aboard, exploring the marina towns and festivals, the change-over week and especially new friends and mentors from all over the world. To say she enjoyed it and that it was life changing would be an understatement!

I love hearing all the stories that just keep coming! She will definitely be back next year! ...I’m happy to provide references to any parent considering this program for their teenager.

Thank you again!!”

Today’s youth face unprecedented pressures. Many carry hidden burdens—stress, anxiety, trauma, or even post-traumatic stress caused by events beyond their control. Increasingly, psychologists and educators are discovering that the most powerful path toward healing is not always found indoors, but in nature, in movement, and in meaningful shared challenges.

That is one reason sailing expeditions have become a powerful form of experiential therapy.

The Therapeutic Power of the Sea

Scientific research increasingly supports what sailors have long sensed: time on the water can profoundly benefit mental health.

Studies of sailing-based programs have shown improvements in quality of life, emotional well-being, and social functioning among participants facing mental health challenges.

Other research into nature-based adventure programs—including sailing—suggests these activities can help reduce symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD by encouraging emotional regulation, resilience, and positive engagement with the environment.

Participants in therapeutic sailing programs frequently report:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved mood and emotional balance

  • Increased confidence and self-efficacy

  • Stronger social connection and trust

  • A renewed sense of purpose and momentum

Even structured sailing interventions with veterans have demonstrated reductions in PTSD symptoms and improved psychological flexibility, suggesting that the combination of nature exposure, teamwork, and challenge can be particularly powerful.

Why Sailing Works

Several unique elements of sailing make it especially therapeutic for young people who have experienced stress or trauma.

1. Total Focus on the Present Moment

Sailing demands attention—to the wind, the sea, the sails, the crew. This kind of immersive activity naturally creates mindfulness, helping the mind step away from rumination and anxiety.

2. Healthy Risk and Achievement

Learning to handle a sailing vessel builds real competence. Every maneuver—hoisting sail, steering through waves, navigating a harbor—creates small victories that restore confidence and self-belief.

3. Teamwork and Trust

A sailing crew must work together. For teenagers who may feel isolated or disconnected, this shared responsibility fosters belonging and camaraderie.

4. Nature’s Restorative Effect

Psychologists increasingly recognize the mental-health benefits of “blue spaces”—oceans, rivers, and lakes—which can enhance mood, reduce stress, and promote mental rejuvenation.

5. Movement, Sunlight, and Fresh Air

Physical activity outdoors supports both physical and psychological health, improving sleep, mood, and energy levels.

Beyond Therapy: Life Skills for the Future

While the therapeutic benefits are profound, sailing expeditions offer much more than emotional recovery.

Young sailors also develop:

  • Leadership and responsibility

  • Problem-solving and resilience

  • Communication and teamwork

  • Confidence in unfamiliar environments

  • A lifelong appreciation for the natural world

Research on youth sailing programs shows that participation can strengthen self-esteem, emotional regulation, and social skills, while also improving physical coordination and endurance.

In other words, sailing does not simply help young people heal—it helps them grow.

A Different Kind of Reset

Many teenagers today spend enormous amounts of time online. Sailing expeditions offer something rare: an immersive break from screens and modern pressures.

Life aboard a sailing vessel is simple and purposeful:

  • Sail with the wind in your sails

  • Cook and eat together

  • Navigate historic coasts and harbors

  • Fall asleep to the rhythm of the sea

For many young people, this rhythm restores balance in ways that few other experiences can.

The QBE Approach

At QBE Sailing and the European Leadership School, we believe the sea is one of the world’s greatest teachers.

Our expeditions combine:

  • Hands-on sailing instruction

  • Small crews and strong mentorship

  • Exploration of historic European coastlines

  • Leadership development and cultural discovery

Participants don’t simply learn to sail.

They discover what they are capable of.

A Voyage Toward Strength and Renewal

For young people navigating stress, uncertainty, or trauma, the sea offers something deeply powerful:

• ample space to breathe,
• new challenges to overcome,
• and the quiet confidence that comes from mastering a truly special, life-elevating skill.

The staff–to-student ratio is 1:3. Instruction is in English.

Since 2023, we have welcomed crew members from the UK, France, the United States, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Norway, Greece, Switzerland, Canada, Turkey/Portugal, Brazil, Croatia, China, Angola, and New Zealand.

ABOUT US

QBE is an internationally acclaimed experiential-learning initiative founded by a group of adventure sport enthusiasts who, once upon a time, all found themselves at the same legendary Swiss boarding school—a place where outdoor and cultural expeditions were not just encouraged but required. Skiing, mountaineering, cycling, and sailing always seemed to be the favorite outdoor options.

Years later, when one of the school’s former expedition masters came across two classic pilot cutters for sale, he saw an opportunity to recreate and expand one of the school’s most transformative experiences—blue-water sailing—so that young people from a broader range of backgrounds could benefit.

At QBE, we believe that challenging outdoor adventures, like small-yacht sailing at sea, can be nothing short of magic for teenagers. These kinds of experiences boost self-esteem, inspire independence, and build lifelong skills—especially when participants are trusted to make real decisions as part of a small team. That’s why so many top schools around the world now incorporate expeditionary learning into their curricula.

And when it comes to adventure, nothing quite compares to slicing through the waves on a traditional sailing vessel—except perhaps the satisfaction of pulling into harbor after a challenging day at sea. Unlike wilderness treks, our expeditions also offer exposure to rich authentic European culture: lively ports, local cuisine, and centuries of history in every seaside destination.

Crew members return home Changed • Confident • Energized • Proud of what they’ve accomplished. That’s because they have accomplished something impressive—together. While they’ll still have their smartphones when they return home to their daily routines, they’ll have a new, more balanced outlook on life and all its expansive possibilities. In fact, you’ll be amazed by the difference a few weeks of world-class adventure can make in a young person’s life trajectory.
